The Mustang Mach1 returns

The Ford’s next Mach1 reboot stays closer to home as hardcore 5-litre V8 coupe. After Ford's preview of the new Mustang Mach 1, but new images have already appeared of a prototype taken outside Ford's development centre in Dearborn, Michigan. The new Mustang Coupe variant will be a reboot of the iconic V8-powered Mach 1 of the late 1960s, designed to be the most track-capable version of the ‘standard’ Mustang, sitting between the standard GT and Shelby GT350 in the North American range. … and not to get too close to the Shelby GT models that top the current Mustang range in the US, this Mach 1 will be powered by the GT's 460 hp (454bhp) 5-litre naturally aspirated 'Coyote' V8 instead of the GT350's more highly strung 5.2-litre 'Voodoo' unit, which is noted mostly for its rev-hungry flat-plane crank construction and ear-splitting exhaust note.

The Mustang Mach1 will return to the model range soon

The specific details about its chassis upgrades remain vague at this point, but a likely upgrade includes revisions to the suspension, combining a firmer setup to improve body control on either a passive damper set or the clever magnetorheological found on the GT350. We can see a larger brake package though, dominated by a pair of red six-piston Brembo brake calipers gripping enlarged discs behind a set of new wheels. The idea is how serious a Mustang is made by Ford with this Mustang Mach 1, which got the Michelin Cup 2 tyres (on the prototype) – that’s serious rubber for any roadcar. The Mustang Mach 1’s new styling elements should help distinguish it from both the standard GT and Shelby GT350, its design derived from the standard GT’s and not the GT350’s lower, wider body. The Mach 1 will feature retro design touches, including what look to be two ring-LED daytime running lights integrated into the bespoke mesh grille and a redesigned bumper housing.

Along the leading edge of the bodywork the whole way around is a more aggressive splitter, skirt and diffuser combination, finished off at the rear by a stacked rear spoiler with a subtle gurney flap sat at its trailing edge. Upgrades to the seats, belts and trim inside will likely accompany the exterior changes. Unfortunately, Ford has no plans at this stage to bring the Mach 1 to the UK or Europe, but where the more extreme Shelby GT350 and GT500 models stumbled at their first hurdle to European homologation due to European emissions regulations, the Mach 1’s V8 is already approved for European consumption, so the European model is expected to be available soon, as soon as the market around the world restarts.
